DC UNITED CRUSH ATLANTA UNITED 3-1

DC United would be excited with the results against their guests at the Audi Field, Washington. They thrashed Atlanta 3-1 and would be happy with the maximum points from the game, even happier that they could stop Josef Martinez from entering the scorers’ list. Martinez has been on a scoring spree which has fired Atlanta United to one of the top spots in the conference.

Luciano Acosta opened scoring through a successful counter attack through team effort. Wayne Rooney doubled the scoreline from the penalty spot early in the second half, sealing their path to victory. Atlanta was pressuring them so the goal was a much need break. After what they suffered in the hands of Philadelphia on Thursday, losing 2-0 at home, it was a dream result for them to be 2-0 up against one of the best performing teams in the league.

Atlanta were on the offensive early in the game but Bill Hamid, Rooney and Acosta combined to get the opener. “Atlanta kept on with the pressure, pushing more players upfield.“ They got a break when Jeff Larentowicz scored from a corner kick. After the break, DC pushed back the pressure and it paid off when they were awarded the spot kick that the former Manchester United star converted.

Martinez tried three times but he could not register a strong attempt at goal, after claiming the MLS record for most goals in a single season. Acosta combined with Rooney to finish off the game much later to hand DC United an important victory.

By the way, there are reports DC United could turn to David Moyes to take on the mantle if Coach Gerardo Martino leaves. The former Barcelona manager could exit the side when his contract lapses at the end of the season. Though he has an option to extend it considering how good the team had fared under him. However, it seems the former Manchester United manager would get the nod, with Tim Howard and Landon Donovan providing excellent references.
